The isothermal haze chamber with discontinuous flow: a new experimental device for CCN measurements at low supersaturation

چکیده
Ž . An isothermal haze chamber IHC has been designed, incorporating results from the tests of Ž . earlier instruments held at the 1981 Reno NV workshop. This instrument, named isothermal haze Ž . chamber with discontinuous flow IHCDF , periodically discontinues the flow through the haze chamber in order to form a well-defined region of 100% RH in the center of the chamber. Indeed, tests performed with our conventional continuous flow IHC showed a poorly defined 100% RH field in the chamber, mainly due to an unsteady laminar air flow through the chamber during measurement. Experiments with polydispersed NaCl aerosol showed that a supersaturation spectrum could be obtained within a growth time of 300 s, over a supersaturation range of 0.01–0.1%. The instrument is suitable for field use. It is contained in a package 1.4 m high and weighs 5 kg. Three minutes is required to collect the air sample and 5 min for drop growth, thus permitting the analysis of seven samples per hour. q 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The Continuous-Flow Streamwise Thermal-Gradient Cloud Condensation Nuclei Counter is a commercially-available instrument that is widely used for laboratory and field measurements of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). Typically, the instrument is operated at a constant flow rate, and supersaturation is adjusted by changing the column streamwise temperature difference, which is slow and may introdu...

This work thoroughly analyzes a new commercial instrument for measuring Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN), the Droplet Measurement Technologies Cylindrical Continuous-Flow Streamwise Thermal Gradient CCN Chamber (CFSTGC). This instrument can measure CCN concentrations at supersaturations from 0.06% to 3% (potentially up to 6%), at a 1 Hz sampling rate that is sufficient for airborne operation. Ou...

[1] A cloud condensation nucleus (CCN) closure experiment is carried out using data from the Chebogue Point, Nova Scotia, ground site during the International Consortium for Atmospheric Research on Transport and Transformation (ICARTT) field experiment in 2004. The number concentration of CCN at five supersaturations ( 0.07% to 0.5%) is predicted from measurements of aerosol size distribution, ...

We present a new method of determining the size and composition of CCN-active aerosol particles. Method utility is illustrated through a series of ambient measurements. A continuous-flow thermal-gradient diffusion chamber (TGDC), pumped counterflow virtual impactor (PCVI), and Aerodyne time-of-flight mass spectrometer (AMS) are operated in series. Ambient particles are sampled into the TGDC, wh...
